A
New Collaboration among Religious Leaders of the World
Addressing the World's population through a telecast from
the United Nations General Assembly Hall, these revered
leaders demonstrated their United Commitment and determination
to work together to eliminate the causes that perpetrate
violence and lead to war. They took a number of concrete
steps to declare their commitment to work more closely
as a community of spiritual leaders and with the diplomatic
community of the United Nations to prevent the outbreak
of war. They will work together to discern shared commitments
to peace expressed in a Declaration for World Peace. Moreover,
an International Advisory Council of Religious and Spiritual
Leaders will be formed to work with the United Nations
and the United Nations Secretary General in peacemaking
and peacekeeping efforts. The council will add a unique
spiritual dimension to the United Nations difficult task
of mediating conflicts between nations and among peoples
from different religious and ethnic groups. |

A
Commitment of Global Peace
Humanity stands at a critical juncture in history, one
that calls for strong moral and spiritual leadership to
help set a new direction for society. We, as religious
and spiritual leaders, recognize our special responsibility
for the well being of the human family and peace on earth.... |
|
We, as religious and spiritual
leaders, pledge our commitment to work together to promote
the inner and outer conditions that foster peace and the
non-violent management and resolution of conflict. We
appeal to the followers of all religious traditions and
to the human community as a whole to co-operate in building
peaceful societies, to seek mutual understanding through
dialogue where there are differences, to refrain from
violence, to practice compassion, and to uphold the dignity
of all life. |

- BAWA JAIN,
Secretary-General of the Millenium World Peace Summit,
signing on behalf of the Millennium World Peace Summit

THUS PRAYED
THE ENLIGHTENED ONES OF INDIA
(A Universal Prayer for World Peace)
|
|
Adorable Presence!
Thou who art within and without, above and below and
all around.
Thou who art interpenetrating the very cells of our
being.
Thou who art the Eye of our eyes; Ear of our ears; Heart
of our hearts;
Mind of our minds; Breath of our breaths;
Life of our lives and Soul of our souls.
Bless us dear God to be aware of Thy presence now and
here.
This is all that we ask of Thee.
May all of us be aware of Thy presence
in the East and the West, in the North and the South.
May peace and goodwill abide
among individuals as well as communities and nations.
This is our earnest prayer.
May peace be unto all.
