Well, at its core, the technique of coaching really is drawing on the wisdom within the individual that already exists. So, the difference is profound and what that translates into is productivity, it translates into innovation, it translates into business impact. In personal development, I think there’s a lot of challenges to that statement that there’s something below the desire for money and what is that really about. I think we talked about something like this once, and he said, “Yeah, that’s really just not an option for me to ignore the partner’s email to me, an associate, for a full day.” And so, I guess your response will be, “Well, hey, maybe it’s a half a day or a quarter of a day or an hour, but it’s something other than nonstop checking.” Any pro tips on how we can sort of help shape our environment in terms of like the people and the messaging we convey to them? Am I in the right job?” What I always say to that is, “Are you honing the core skillset that you want to carry with you throughout your career? Dave Crenshaw Oh, I just appreciate that you do it. And, you know, what you’re sharing, also it’s really important for anybody listening to realize, like some of us are kind of cut off from our bodies. And so, you’ve noticed, like, “Hey, when I open up a program, I wait less now with my newer computer.”. And all employees, hopefully, in Microsoft, as we get our 16,000 plus managers through this, will hopefully benefit from the actual coaching techniques that we’re teaching. I’m assigning two graduate students to be your guides, so here they are, and they’re going to take you around, and you’re going to meet every single member of the center, every faculty member, every graduate student.” So, they did that exact thing and then they took me to lunch. So, in my case, words can look like many things. Should I go? Hey, Pete, you shared with me that you’ve got some challenges going on with getting the little ones to sleep. Thanks, Pete. God knows the world needs these people. So, when we talk about showing up with a coach mindset, there’s an aspect of discernment that we ask each of us to have. Would you want to spend about four hours together, just talking about whatever your next book is about? I’ve told a bestselling author that I couldn’t afford to bring to one of my conferences, I said, “Look, I’ve written a lot of bestselling books. First, can you define that term and tell us why it matters? So, could you lay it on there, is there a distinction there? I’ve seen some that say less. And I’m going to say top in terms of it’s high impact, and it’s maybe frequently overlooked, and it’s relatively easy to make the shift. What is the shared common sense of how much time we should allow for an email response? Sure. Well, you got one more. So, this is work that you’re motivated to spend money in your work or save it or keep it. And I’m really inspired by these people because I find that we live in a world where it’s really easy to be complicated. Through her two viral TEDx speeches, her online courses, her email list of 500,000 and her show. And the power of coaching, really that activation of curiosity and empowering a growth mindset, was the trigger that we thought was necessary. So, I think there are several ways to come at it but you’ve got to start with your own credibility. Pete Mockaitis Thousands of listeners as I sleep. So, I generalize broadly but I have found that my generalizations actually turn out to be quite accurate over time. In fact, the more power you actually have in a company, the more time you spend only dealing with problems. So, this is a career that really leads with creating through your feelings and through your ideas. It is a journey though. We had classical definitions of what is a large account, and then you had these magical unicorns that were coming out left and right and using technology and innovation. Oh, yes. Now, my training is on LinkedIn Learning, which you’re very familiar with. And what’s your pro tip in terms of if folks kind of have an idea, like, “Ah, this is probably one and that’s probably another. We live it constantly throughout our day. We ask, however, that you please make certain your treats are peanut/nut free, as we have some children in the classrooom with allergies. At no point will any of these people start feeling sorry for themselves. Or, if there’s another scenario you’d like to run with, we can do that. But let me tell you something. Oh, that’s true. They have to hone their craft, and so I like getting inspiration from uncommon places. It’s just being more coach-like. You need to actually make a business case for yourself. It’s like some of the easiest result I can deliver in a training, frankly, to just have that conversation. And I think a lot of people are in careers right now that maybe aren’t working for them. Even in professional coaching, you start off in the International Coach Federation where you go through 60 hours of training, and then you get a 100 hours’ worth of actual application, and then you can finally test to be a professional coach. And the sixth one is coordination. So, if you want to control how your story ends up, spend more time being the hero, more time being the guide, less time being the victim, and less time being the villain, and things are going to go okay. So, do you have any pretty wild stories from either of these encounters? We found that there was a certain order of skills that you had to develop as your company got bigger. Lay it on us. Andrea Wanerstrand And she wrote a whole book on that, and it’s fascinating. Don Miller And when people say they’re a good multitasker, most often they’re talking about switch-tasking. And the reason it cost people a lot of money is because it sucks all the energy into the dramatic employee, and it’s that energy they can’t use to make a product or serve a customer. So, let me give you another one that is a pattern that we see very clearly. And with Viktor Frankl, the study and the understanding of story structure has been a fantastic tool that helped me experience more meaning. And so, we have to maintain, in order to maintain high levels of psychological safety, we have to maintain high levels of respect and permission. It’s just like not there.”. And you have a conversation about what is an emergency. Okay. And it allows for folks to do micro-learnings, so bite-sized learning, as well as practice and cohorts, how to be more coach-like, and then actually go apply every week. Well, I guess that’s what I’m wondering. Don’t get tipped over by little things that people say or do even when they, perhaps, were not done with the best intent. And what’s interesting about ease is I was thinking about David Allen, Getting Things Done. We think we’re having a financial negotiation but we’re human beings. Andrea Wanerstrand It was probably coming up on four and a half years. He’s really funny and he’s brilliant but he’s probably a hundred grand to come speak. It’s a fascinating study. The analysis and research is a means to an end of we’re evaluating you, Ashley, and seeing, “Okay, does she have good stuff?” and so we’re using deep research in terms of like the verdicts, “Do we invite Ashley and do we pass?” And then the words, in terms of, “How do we…? Nobody’s ever asked me about this. Timothy Clark Those are just a couple of examples. My first job was Popeyes Fried Chicken, my second job was delivering Chinese food, my third job was Kmart, my fourth job was Radio Shack. Well, you know what’s so amazing about the truth is I don’t necessarily think the truth is something that people learn. I think you’ve got an idea.”. What about the beginning, lunch, and the end of the day? The leads from that has turned into another $4 million, so that’s $8 million. Well, Pete, let’s do this. I love it. Now I just use my phone but I am constantly just trying to capture insights and thoughts and observations. Pete Mockaitis And so then, it’s just a matter of doing it and ensuring then that the right things are getting executed and the focus remains where it needs to go, eh? He was just telling a story. Pete Mockaitis How do you think about career, strategy, job hunting, getting unstuck stuff differently than other career coaches out there? Far too often, people hold their careers too heavily and they slow themselves down for making decisions. I think I’m an $85,000 a year person. And when you think about that, that’s the size of a cat or dog’s brain. You know something is a core value where if you take away that word, you’re not you anymore. Pete Mockaitis I hear you. So, as we go through this discussion, we want you to tell us what’s wrong with our point of view, what’s wrong with this proposed course of action, where are the flaws, shoot holes in it, and we’re giving you this as an assignment.”. And how about a favorite book? And what are they doing? That’s cool. You know, it’s funny, today, my sweet wife did the hard work last night and I was in a different location doing some better sleep. So, I was intrigued, so as we were emailing back and forth, you said, “I’ve got some stuff that your people have never heard before,” so, I’m intrigued. He loves criticism. And if they don’t, if you really are that good, everybody here is an economic product on the open market so you take your skills elsewhere and you charge what you think that you are worth. We heard about making more mistakes and taking longer. And every coaching conversation looks different but the main thing between our conversation A versus this conversation B is I didn’t offer up any specific suggestions. Pete Mockaitis Dave Crenshaw I’m going to be really conservative. Ashley Stahl So for example, right now on this podcast, if you notice, my core skillset is words. But it is magical because there are some thresholds, like at some point when your hourly compensation rises to one point, it’s like, “You know what, now might make sense to have me hire someone to help clean the house. In fact, don’t try to make it perfect. So, let’s go to stage two, first of all, to learner safety. Dr. Timothy Clark discusses the specific benefits and behaviors associated with high-performing, psychologically safe teams. That’s kind of interesting. Are there some favorite tips, tricks, scripts, questions? Otherwise, if your skills are atrophying then you may very well be less valuable three, five years from now than when you started, which is not the direction you want to go in. Oh, okay. It’ll teach you how to clarify a message, how to create a marketing sales funnel, how to create mission statement and guiding principles. We think that that’s going to cost about a million dollars to produce so we should see a profit of about 5.2 million pre-overhead.”. I imagine, you said it does vary from person to person, but I would just love it if there’s anyone on the fence, we can just nail them with a number. Then if something goes wrong, you’re going to protect me in that process. So, it’s the amount of time that a programmer took to recover, and that is extremely high for an intense task like that. It holds them whole, capable, and resourceful and it allows curiosity to come forth. The third question is, “Am I contributing?” So, that takes you to the third level or stage of psychological safety.
